In normal instances

The drive presses the brake pedal which pushes a hydraulic system which in turn closes the calipers on the cars breaks. These calipers have pads on them that close around the wheel disc. The wheels slow to an eventual stop. In other ways a car can stop by remaining in gear and turning the engine off. However, this is both dangerous and extreme but does work.
