You can get a fair idea from the advertising web-sites for show-caves, but by no means all caves look like those!

Caves are so varied - some carry rushing streams, others are dry and silent; some are richly adorned with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, others are barren of formations.

Some are in clean-washed rock, others present squalidly muddy wallows that would delight a hippopotamus.

Some hold ginormous passages whose roof is lost in darkness beyond your lamp-light; others offer long. low miserable crawls.

Some are basically stair-cases of shafts necessitating a lot of rope and special equipment to negotiate them. Others gain similar depths but on very gently slopes.

Caves are like that - and when you are exploring a "new" cave for its first time you literally don't know what's round the next corner.
