The 'name' of a case is called the STYLE of the case and it consists of the names of the parties involved (e.g.: Jones v. Smith, in a civil case or The state of ____ v. John BadGuy, in the case of a criminal case).

Most civil cases are in the form "Plaintiff vs Defendant", such as "Tom vs Jerry". Criminal cases are usually in the form of the "Plaintiff" , like a city, county, state, or federal government, vs Defendant, such as "State of California vs Orenthal James Simpson" or "United States vs Miller".

Typically they are named as Plaintiff(s) v. Defendant(s). So if John Smith sued Frank Jones, the case would be captioned John Smith v. Frank Jones (or Smith v. Jones for short). Cases are also assigned a case number (e.g., 98-001), which, along with the court name, would be used in the caption of any court filing.
