In the United States children hang up stockings for Santa to fill on Christmas Eve.

In the Netherlands, children work similarly with wooden shoes.

In Italy children get their gifts from Santa under the tree on Christmas Day, and eat Panettone.

In Spain children celebrate Three Kings Day and receive their gifts in January. Christmas is celebrated with family.

In Spain and throughout many countries in Latin America many people go to Midnight Mass on December 24th (called the Misa del Gallo). When they return from mass, the family opens its Christmas gifts.

In Germany children celebrate December 6th, Nikolaustag , by placing their shoes in front of the door and (hopefully) finding sweets and fruit the next day inside them. The Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) is also a favorite among Germans to meet up with friends and enjoy a Glühwein. (hot red wine with spices) It's beautiful in Germany at Christmas time!

French children put their shoes in front of the fireplace on Christmas eve, so that Santa Claus (Père Noël) can fill them with gifts. Candy, fruit, nuts, and small toys are also hung on the tree overnight. French families have le Réveillon, which is a huge feast. In each region they eat different food such as turkey, capon, goose, chicken… As a dessert they eat the traditional buche de Noël which is a log shaped chocolate and chestnuts cake. Christmas eve is called Reveillon throughout France, but in some areas New Year's Eve is also called Reveillon.
