Put simply - it's 'natural survival' Their wild ancestors had large litters to increase the chances of a single baby surviving to adult-hood - thus ensuring the survival of the species. Domestication hasn't suppressed this survival instinct, so they still produce large litters instead of just one or two.

Survival of the species. In their evolution, with dogs born in the wild, there would be a number of animals that would prey on the young pups. Having more than one baby increases the chance that at least one puppy will survive to adulthood.

Although there is no need for this practice in domestic dogs - their reproductive system is still geared to produce multiple births instead of a single puppy.

They arent like humans, they can have up to 9 babies a litter. They are long and that's how all the babies fit inside of them. Many shorter dogs don't have many baies, probably up to 5.
