Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the oil pan, and then remove the filter.

Actually the drain plug is at the back of the oil pan. It's a stupid design because when you remove the plug the oil shoots straight back toward the rear of the car. Mine will shoot as much as a foot depending on how warm the oil is. So, when you change the oil make sure you have a very wide mouthed catch pan to catch the oil or else it will likely miss the opening. Then as the oil gets closer to completely drained the stream will not be shooting as far and you'll have to adjust the position of your catch pan. Onthebottomoftheoilpan.
