Firefighters must co-operate with each other on the emergency scenes. Whether it be a House Fire, Vehicle Accident, Medical Emergency, or any other scene, co-operation is extremely important. Firefighters will have to stay in teams of, at least, two firefighters while entering a burning building, which requires trust in the other persons that they are working with. They must cooperate while extricating patients from a wrecked vehicle, also. This is because not only 1 person can do the job.

The short answer to the first question is EVERYTHING! Teamwork is a foundation for all that we do in the fire service. We use it in training as a means of mentoring younger firefighters. Firefighting/Rescue is as much art as science and training cannot occur without older, more experienced members sharing their knowledge with other members.

On the fire/rescue emergency scene, teamwork is essential. Many pieces of equipment cannot be operated by a single firefighter. Most of our procedures and techniques require multiple firefighters. In addition, from a safety standpoint, we never allow a firefighter to enter a burning structure alone. This maintains crew accountability and there is a partner there to assist anyone who encounters difficulty.

We also stress teamwork because due to the fact that lives depend on our ability to perform it is ingrained in all firefighters that they have a responsibility to the team. By working as a team member, the individual is held accountable to the team for his/her actions.

The benefits of teamwork are safety, accountability, and efficiency of operations. Firefighters know their respective responsibilities in any given situation and it is of utmost importance in the fire service culture that an individual "contribute" to the effort. The number one thing desired by firefighters is the respect of other firefighters. This desire to be a respected member of the team leads to extraordinary acts of heroism.

Hope this helped, if you need more detail, let me know.

Why is the word rekindle one that firefighters do not want to hear?

The word rekindle means that there was enough heat, fuel and air left in the fire that it started to burn after the firefighters had put it out and left the scene. This is not only dangerous, it can be expensive as a new set of firefighters need to respond and do a more thorough job. On the other hand, sometimes "rekindle" actually indicates an arsonist at work and this puts everyone on high alert for any unusual activities or indications.
