They are wound up very tightly, draining leftover water from the hose. If they are cotton-covered hoses (rather than plastic), they are then transported back to the station, unrolled, washed, and laid out or hung in the hose tower to dry. Once they are dry, they can be rolled for storage, or put back onto a fire engine for future use.
Fire hoses are made out of fireproof materials, but when dry, they can still burn in a really hot fire. But usually during a fire, the hoses have water in them which cools them and keeps them from burning.
