The fall of the Roman Empire. When Rome fell government fell. The Romans had a system of courts, laws, and a strong military. They built roads, kept water going to the cities, and made repairs to these things. As soon as this was gone chaos ruled. There was no protection for people and to fill the void strong men took over taking regions for their own and making the population serfs working for them, paying taxes, and fighting in their wars. Roads and water systems went into disrepair and knowledge disappeared on how to make them. It would take another 1,000 years before the world would come out of the Dark Ages.
