The methods that historians utilize to write history differs based on their perspective and interest. While many begin with some similar research methods, there are factors like philosophy and focus that make writing history unique to the historian.
Most historians will begin with a topic of interest and then do extreme amounts of research. Most will do their best get data from dependable primary sources, but some will also need to utilize secondary sources.
Upon collection of evidence the historian may try to create an argument or thesis, and find supporting evidence for this. An example of this might be "The mayoral elections of 1948 were influenced by the changing role of women in the community." Then the historian is likely to weave together information and support the thesis with facts procured by the research and may include narrative, past articles from the news, archival photos, etc. Like any writing, it will go through a revision and editing process. It may also be peer reviewed.
Philosophy of history, or historiography of the historian, will also influence how the historian writes history. In other words, how the historian defines history and see's it's purpose will affect the final outcome. For example, some historians write history as a method to teach us to not repeat the past, while others use it as a means to explain how culture arrived to where it is, and still others believe it is just interesting trivia. Obviously "voice" will differ amongst these perspectives.
Another factor is something called "lense" of the historian. Some historians focus on political factors, some military factions, some are biographers, while others look at social trends, and still others focus on daily lives and relationships. Basically this interest or speciality will play a factor in what a historian researchs and write about.
In the end, historians utilize the same writing process of many writers researching, drafting, revising ect. What is unique is the perspectives they choose and their voice in writing.
Historians write history by researching primary and secondary sources, analyzing evidence, and constructing narratives based on their findings. They aim to present an accurate and balanced account of past events, considering different perspectives and interpretations. Additionally, historians strive to be objective and provide context to help readers understand the historical significance of their work.
Some common approaches in the study of history include political history, social history, economic history, cultural history, and intellectual history. These approaches allow historians to analyze different aspects of human experience and how they have evolved over time. By using these approaches, historians can gain a deeper understanding of the past and its impact on the present.
To write a synopsis for a PhD thesis in history, introduce the topic and its significance, provide an overview of the research questions and methodology, summarize the main findings and arguments, and conclude with the broader implications of the research. Be concise, clear, and structured to present a compelling and informative overview of the thesis.
