How do horses play?

In arena polo, only three players are required per team . But to the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle.

Modern polo is played with 4 players each one having a certain position on the team. Player 1 is the offensive player and is there to mainly cover the opposing teams number 4 player. The number 2 player is also an offence player but can also score goals and will cover the opposing teams number 3 player. Player number 3 is the tactical leader and is usually the best player on the team, they score the most goals as a general rule. The number 4 player is the primary defense player they can go anywhere they want but tend to try to prevent the opposing team from scoring.

Polo must be played right handed for safety reasons. Players try to 'ride off' another player who has the ball by interrupting their 'line of travel' by 'gently' pushing them and there horse away from the ball. There are six 7 minute Chukkers, between chukkers riders change mounts as polo ponies are allowed to play only one seven minute chukker per game. Play continues for 30 seconds at the end of each chukker. Then there is a four minute interval between the chukkers and a 10 minute halftime. The highest score at the end of the game wins.
