Given the length of the Nile and the tens of millions who live close by, it's impossible to be specific in an answer. However, pollution is a major problem - from residents, tourism, industry etc. The efforts to combat this obviously helps and the dams on the river help and hinder - they stop the silt from flowing downstream, but by doing that it causes a large build-up behind the dam and also restricts the rivers flow.
