If your planning to format only the drive C you can move your important files to your drive D. Formatting drive C and D you will lose all your files. You need a external device like USB flash drive to back up all you files. Before formatting you drive C and D make sure you transfer all your important file to the flash drive.

∙ 11y agoYou'll need one or more DVD-R or DVD-RW disks. Click Start > Control Panel > Back-up & Restore. Make sure you set the destination drive correctly - and start the back-up. The computer will prompt for extra disks as, and when required.
If you're wanting to wipe your hard-drive before you sell your computer - make sure you use a proper disk-wiping program - preferably one with the ability to over-write existing data rather than delete it. Deleting data simply over-writes the reference track on the hard-drive that holds the location of each file. It is possible to recover deleted files if they're still accessible. A disk-wiping program overwrites every sector on the hard-drive with random data - which obliterates existing files completely.
