I would first suspect the coil pack or the plug wires that lead to the misfiring cylinder. On the 2.4L check the coil housing carfully.It has metal strips that can burn in half.Could be spark plugs, or low cylinder compression, or low fuel pressure, or vacume leak, or leaking EGR valve, or faulty fuel injector, or burnt valves. If you can add to this list, please do....good luck with the problem.

The tensioner bolt for a 96 Cavalier is in the pulley for the tensioner. The tensioner is in the middle of the front of the engine.
