Sorry to burst your bubble, but for a beginner weldor of any process it takes lots of practise and proper learning. The perfect Bead wont just happen. You have to perfect your bead each time you weld. This especially must be done with stick because it is the hardest form of Arc Welding. Once you learn it you can master any other process. Just strike a clean arc and continue in a strait line all the way down. If you want you can add a slight half moon or wisping motion to the puddle. On thicker metal you should point the rod down to the opposite end of the work piece to simulate a "pushing" direction for the puddle. For smaller gage or even sheet metal you should pull the puddle down from one end to the other and stay on the end of the leading edge of the puddle. What is polarity in welding?

Polarity in welding has to do with the direction of the current in the welding process. With direct current (DC) the welding circuit can either be straight, or reverse polarity. When the machine is set for straight polarity, the current flows from the electrode to the weld surface and creates considerable heat in the metal. When the machine is in reverse polarity, the current is backwards and is flowing from the metal to the electrode causing a grater concentration of heat at the electrode.
