I have a very similar question and have discovered that NONE of the questions I've seen on this site are answered. Some claim to be answers, but are merely a rephrasing of the question! As far as I can tell this site is useless...
How do you change the typewriter ribbon of a Smith Corona 1940?
One can purchase a Smith Corona ribbon on websites like Smith Corona Type Writer, Amazon, Office Depot, Typer Writers Supply, Smith Corona or BB Crafts.
The best site to purchase Smith Corona typewriter ribbon (considering price and reliability) is via Ebay. The typewriter ribbon can also be bought on TigerDirect.
To assemble: 1) Hold the correction cartridge in your left hand and the ribbon cartridge in your right hand such that the mostly flat slick sides (bottom) of the cartridges are facing each other and the arms or pointed ends are facing up. 2) Look for the mounting tabs on the correction cartridge. The mounting tabs will be near the pointed ends and on the bottom side of the cartridge. 3) Hold both cartridges so that you can put them together with the bottom sides facing one another. 4) Take the ribbon cartridges pointed ends and slide the two cartridges together by beginning with the pointed ends of the ribbon cartridge sliding across the bottom of the correction cartridge until the pointed ends of the ribbon cartridge slide into the slots on the correction cartridge and both pointed ends align with each other. 5) Press both cartridges together until you hear a light snap sound. 6) Wind the ribbon using the blue or orange gear (clockwise) on the right rear side of the ribbon cartridge until the ribbon appears all black between the arms. 7) Then wind the correction tape on the cartridges with the similar gear on its cartridge clockwise until the clear correction tape appears. 8) Place into typewriter and you are ready to type. To Remove one from the other: Notice that there is a small latch that will release the two cartridges from one another that is on the ribbon cartridge. It is located in between the two pointed arms on the main body of the ribbon cartridge. Press it and slightly pull the cartridges apart and slide the correction cartridge off.
yes
I don't know how old this post is, but I have a used on I am selling. It works perfectly, I just printed my old papers. They still sell the ribbon, and I have extra correction tape, print wheel, and the manual. Please contact me at carolyn0219@gmailcom very soon if you are interested, I am done with this and need to get rid of it.
The Selectric II is a typewriter. Ribbon is called a cassette, not cartridge. As I recall to replace ribbon there is a lever on right of it that is pulled forward to release used ribbon. Correctable model also uses a correction tape.

Ribbon cables are difficult to work with and it is never a good idea to install cables on a device when it has power running to it. Components could short and be damaged or the technician could be damaged.
Open the cover, push the red lever on the right hand side of the ribbon towards the front of the typewriter, and lift the old ribbon off, replace with new ribbon, pull the lever back towards the keyboard and close the lid.
