Some automatic sticks have a release button on them to press. It may be located on the side or the top of the shift knob.
Disengage the linkage.
Park for automatic transmissions, and Neutral for stick shifts.
depress brake pedal
It being in neutral or park.
Bent shift linkage or you are parking on a hill.
Broken "Parking Pawl"?
The automatic Toyota may be stuck in park because of transmission problems. The transmission may be jammed or stuck in that gear.

The shifter on automatic transmission cars is interlocked with the brake. You can not take it out of PARK unless you press on the brake pedal. If you are pressing on the brake and it still will not come out of PARK, the interlock solenoid may be bad.
