This means that something may be wrong with your engine. Take it in to a mechanic and get everything checked out.
If the problem has been fixed and the light remains on you need to disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. That should reset the check engine light.
Remove the battery head(+v) for a while, then replace it and star the engine.

I'm by no means a mechanic nor claim to be but, I had the check engine light come on in my 2003 Tacoma - at the same time for a non related issue, I had to replace the battery. By pulling the battery, it removed the power and the check engine light shut off and has not come on since. I spoke to the dealership regarding and they mentioned that the engine light may not be on, but is still in the memory of the chip and trucks history if it were to be accessed for an inspection or general purposes for the dealership.
I believe the cabin air filter is located in the glove compartment. maybe behind that, You will have the check with your local parts store or with a Toyota dealer for the filter.
I just had my timing belt and water pump replaced on my 2002 Avalon and had the same scenario...the VSC and check engine lights came on. Found out the Cam sensor also needs to be changed at the same time. Once that was done, the problem was cured.
check to see if your dome light is working. if not check the dome light fuse, located in the engine room fuse box. dome fuse powers the trunk release circ.
The 2009 Avalon transmission is a sealed unit and only the dealer can check fluid levels. They say they do it when ever the car is serviced.
To replace the check engine light bulb, you will need to remove the dashboard. Once you have removed the dashboard, the bulb for the light will be exposed and can be changed.
