USE SAFETY ALWAYS!! Basic instructions for a '95 Trooper in layman's terms: Loosen slightly the lug nuts on the tire to change the pads. Safely raise the vehicle where the wheel is to change the brake pads. (Like changing a flat tire.) Remove lug nuts. Remove wheel. Have a piece of wire about 18" long on hand like a clothes hanger. There are two large bolts that hold the calipers onto the axle end. Remove bolts. Remove the caliper holding the brake pads; there are two pieces that move in and out of each other. The pads should slide off of the rotors. Use the wire as needed to hold the caliper while working on the brakes/calipers. Do not over stress the rubber hydraulic brake hoses attaching the caliper to the vehicle! Visually inspect old brake pads for alignment and the wear indicator. (This is a small metal clip that attaches to the brake pad.) Remove both brake pads, or one at a time. Pay attention to the hardware that goes between the brake pad and the caliper, not the rotor side. Use a C clamp or similar device to force the brake ram back into the cylinder. Do not puncture the rubber folds around the ram! (You may need to loosen the cover of the brake fluid reservoir to allow air to escape.) This will allow the new pads to slip over the rotors easier. The new pads may not come with or need the metal shims that came originally on the vehicle. My experience shows that the inside pad wears faster, so the wear indicator clip should go on the inside pad, possibly like the original. Install new pads and slip the calipers with the new pads over the rotors. If the ram was not pushed back far enough, there will not be enough space between the pads to slip over the rotor. Tighten up the large bolts. Torque value? Make sure that they are TIGHT. Pads are to rub slightly on the rotors. Reinstall the tire in reverse order as it came off. Torque lug nuts per manufacturer specs. Tighten the brake fluid reservoir if it was loosened. Additional information: you may want to re-grease the pins that the two pieces of the calipers move on. The rubber boot on the pins may need to be replaced. Sometimes grease is applied to keep the brake pads quiet if you use the shims, grease is needed between the pad and the shim. Good luck!
