I don't think you NEED a "ton of friends", and being "popular enough" is not necessarily a good goal. It is more important to have a few good friends, than to have lots of admirers (which popularity is basically all about).
Winnie the Pooh is afraid of Heffalumps and Woozles, Rabbit is afraid of Tigger's boisterous nature, Piglet is afraid of everything, and Eeyore is afraid of losing his friends.
Talk to him privately, without any of his friends knowing about it.
Think about how you made your friends in middle school and do that. If by being popular, you mean you want to have a lot of friends, then be friendly. Get to know the people in your classes and talk to them about things they are interested in. Be nice and help other people out when you see the chance to do so. Above all, don't be afraid to be yourself!
i am afraid friends i do
because, they don't want to be pathetic or cheesy (cute and cursi) in front of his friends Most likely he is afraid of what is friends might think.

Tell him that you just want to be friends he will understand.:)
Don't be afraid of her friends. They aren't there to form a barrier against guys. Hold your chin up and approach the girl, friends around or not.
Say "We have some problems and I don't think we should be friends," And she/he might get sad at first. And don't be afraid to say that.
