Simply look at the top of the engineif the valve cover has two humps its a dual cam with the sparkplugs located between the humps which covers the cams. 1 hump 1 cam. 2 humps 2 cams
Another Perspective:Look at the model number either on the registration or on the back of the vehicle. If it is a "SL2", it has 2 camshafts.
The "SL1" or just "SL", it has only on camshaft.
There is an easy way to tell if your Ford Focus is a single or dual cam shaft. If it is single, it will have one gear with a belt around it.
how can i tell sohc or dohc
The engine code is either 7 (double overhead cam) or 8 single overhead cam. The single overhead cams have black bumpers the doubles are painteds ( easiest way to tell or the 8 digit of the VIN
SC2 had a larger rocker cover and says DOHC on it. Look at the front of the car, if it has pop-up headlights it is an SC2. If the front of the car looks like the SL front clip than it is an SC1 for 1991-5. the only real difference is on the SC1 the engine says SOHC (single overhead cam) on the SC2 the engine says DOHC (dual overhead cam) its right on the top next to the spark plugs in bog friendly bold letters =]
The Mercury Sable and the Ford Taurus will have DOC in printed on the engine if they are dual overhead cam engines. The symbol should be on the top of the engine.
If they share a common engine then it may. The 8th digit in VIN is the engine code. You can also tell by visually ensuring parts are identical.
single, an easy way to tell on most cars is to pull off the tappet cover and count how many cams there are :D
Either by the engine or the VIN. Use the following for a VIN decoder:http://www.differentracing.com/tech_articles/vin_decode.html

If it is a dual port, meaning that the intake manifold ends spit into two openings on each side, then it is a 1600cc engine. They were introduced in 1971.
If you look under the hood at the engine it will either say SOHC or DOHC which is Single and Double respectivly.
Simply open your cars Hood and find out which engine you have, on top of the engine you should see , DOHC for Dual Overhead Cam, or Twin cam, if you do not see this you likely have a Single overhead Cam engine SOHC. also carefully write down your cars VIN number (vehical Identification Number) it contains an engine code and the parts dealer should be able to supply your alternator from that. Good luck
