Eight days after a boy is born, he is circumcised and named - the traditional way of bringing him into the community. The ceremony is accompanied by a festive meal in which friends and family participate.

Some, but not all, Jews mark the birth of a girl with a simchat bat - a party/festive meal which can take place any time following the birth, as convenient for the parents. The naming of a girl traditionally takes place in the synagogue, on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday (Sabbath) following the birth.

For a baby boy, there is circumcision (brith milah) when he is 8 days old, if the baby is healthy. If not healthy at birth, circumcision is held until baby is healthy. The act of circumcision follows from the time of Abraham when he performed it on himself in order to close a bond or covenant between himself and God.

For a girl, there is a naming ceremony where her Hebrew name is announced publicly.

How the birth of a baby is celebrated in Judaism depends on the sex of the baby:

Boys: On the 8th day there is the brit milah ceremony. The baby boy is circumcised and his Hebrew name is announced. The one exception on the date of the ceremony is if health issues require that the circumcision be delayed.

Girls: There is a baby naming ceremony where the baby is welcomed into the Jewish community and her Hebrew name is announced. There is no set age for when this ceremony occurs but usually it's within the first few months after birth.

It depends on whether the baby is a boy or girl. Boys are circumcised 8 days after they're born unless this has to be delayed due to health reasons. For girls, there is a naming ceremony where she is introduced to family and friends and her Hebrew name is announced.

There aren't many traditional ways of celebrating birthdays. Some throw lavish parties, others do nothing. There is one particular birthday that almost every Jew celebrates, however. This is their bar/bas mitzva. At age 13, boys celebrate their bar mitzva. At age 12, girls celebrate their bas mitzva. At that age, a Jew is obligated in keeping all the mitzvos (commandments).

For girls, the father gives the infant a name on Shabbat when he is called up to the Torah-reading. A kiddush is then held at the synagogue. This is a celebratory meal after the prayer services to which everyone is invited. For boys, there is a shalom zachar; a celebratory meal in the home on Friday night. The boy is given a name at his circumcision ceremony.

In both cases, there is a lot of rejoicing, singing, and wishing of mazel tov.

Much like other people. The only special Jewish birthdays relate to the bar mitzva or bat mitzva, at 12 or 13 years old.
