Very sparingly. They live in eucalyptus trees and eat only a few types of gum leaves from which they get all nutrients and water requirements. Eucalyptus leaves are tough, toxic and low in nutrition, but the koala has developed a stomach which is capable of removing the toxins from where they are filtered out by the liver. The caecum completes the process by changing the eucalyptus leaves into digestible nutrients. The caecum is similar to the human appendix. The koala must eat over a kilogram of leaves per day to meet its energy requirements. Eucalyptus leaves contain approximately 50% water, 18% fibre, 13% tannins, 8% fat, 5% carbohydrates, 4% protein and 2% minerals. Koalas have been seen feeding in 120 kinds of eucalypt tree including Manna Gum, Swamp Gum, Blue Gum, Forest Red Gum and Grey Gum. They spend up to 20 hours per day sleeping and the rest eating.

Koalas get their energy from eucalyptus leaves and flowers; specifically, they get them from eucalyptus of the subgenus Symphomyrtus.

Koalas have a slow metabolic rate which is required for them to digest the eucalyptus leaves on which they feed. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and rather low in nutrition, so the fact that the koala has a slow metabolic rate means it can keep the food within its digestive system for as long as possible in order to maximise the energy that can be extracted from the leaves. This slow metabolic rate also means the koalas sleep for more time each day in order to conserve energy.

How do kangaroos conserve energy as they run?

Yes. Kangaroos are able to hop long distances at a high speed, expending very little energy. They are very energy-efficient, and this is linked directly to the physical action of bringing their hind legs up with each hop. Every hop literally refills the lungs. Kangaroos also have large, strong tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs". The springing motion requires less energy than running does, so kangaroos are able to bound for longer distances than other mammals with the standard four legs can run.

What kind of legs do eastern grey kangaroos have?

Like other kangaroos, Eastern Grey Kangaroos have strong back legs and elongated hind feet for bounding. They have large, strong tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs". The springing motion requires less energy than running does, so kangaroos are able to bound for longer distances than other mammals with the standard four legs can run.

Are kangaroos still around?

Yes. There are millions of kangaroos in their native country of Australia, especially Grey Kangaroos and Red Kangaroos. Factor in all the species of wallabies, tree kangaroos, potoroos, quokkas, rat-kangaroos and wallaroos, and there is no question about whether or not kangaroos are still around.
