They still call and text you constantly. They still want to be around you. They still act like you were dating basically but without the label girlfriend and boyfriend. (Also, minus the kissing or whatever you did with each other.) Unless this was your best friend, then it doesn't apply. Another sign is that they aren't complaining about being single or waiting to go out with someone. You can pretty much tell. If you can still be friends with your ex you either never loved each other or still do.
