LIKE charges REPEL
UNLIKE charges ATTRACT.
NB Think of a pair of magnets. . If the two north or south poles are placed together , they repel .
However, if a north pole and a south pole are placed together , they attract.
In Chemistry ions of opposite charge attract . e.g. Na^(+) + Cl^(-) = NaCl(s)
Like charges repel against each other and unlike charges attract each other
A fundamental law of electrostatics is that opposite charges attract and like charges repel.
unlike charges attract.
This is a way of saying that two like charges repel each other and unlike charges attract. Remember that systems tend to 'seek' the lowest energy state possible.
because the charges are opposite that causes the material to repel. because the charges are opposite that causes the material to repel.
When two bodies charged in similar manner (i.e. like charges) are brought near, they will repel .Whereas when two bodies of different materials charged in different manner(i.e.unlike charges) or one charged & one uncharged body brought near will attract. This is how we can show that like charges repel while unlike charges attract each other.
