They are an electromagnet which is a wire coil wound outside a large iron core. When the coil is energized with electricity by the crane operator it creates magnetism and when the power is switched off the magnetism stops. This type of magnet is what makes a car starter engage, electrical solenoids are a version and many common household items utilize electromagnets. Trunk release on your car, etc.
