Oil collects on their fur and damages its water proof-ness and insulating value causing them to waste more energy trying to keep warm. In addition in trying to clean the oil from their fur they ingest (eat) some of the oil which may be toxic or at the least upset their digestive systems.

Interference with the carrying out of life-sustaining activities is the main way in which oil spills kill marine animals. Oil spills leave marine animals homeless, jobless and useless. Specifically, they degrade or outright destroy where the animals live and how they lead their lives. They make it difficult or impossible to find food sources and to hide from predators. Likewise do they make it difficult or impossible for vital respiratory and ambulatory body parts to work.
