People celebrate Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries, decorating the graves of the soldiers with flowers and flags, and remembering the deeds of the soldiers who gave their lives for the benefit of the country.
Memorial Day is the day to honor all US Military personnel who have given their lives during the fighting in all wars in which the United States has been involved. On all federal buildings and property where the US flag is flown, the flag is displayed at half-staff to show honor and respect for those who died. At noon the flag is raised to full-staff to show that the nation lives.
Since the late 1950s, on the Thursday before every Memorial Day weekend every soldier that is available from the US Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) helps to place more than 260,000 American flags on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery. A flag is centered one foot in front of each grave stone. The process takes about three hours to accomplish. The 3rd Infantry then stands guard 24 hours a day for the entire weekend to ensure that the flags stay upright. The flags are then removed after the weekend is over.
The President of the United States, or his appointed representative, places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Many cemeteries have similar or related ceremonies. There had been a National Memorial Day Parade that was held in Washington, DC. It was started up again in 2004 for the first time in over 60 years. And there are other parades held in almost every state of the Union. These are just some of the traditional things that are done on Memorial Day.

Most people would go to a memoiance of the people who died in their family, or they would make a engraving to put on their grave.
It is not so much celebrated as it is solemnized. We, the survivors, bring to mind (remembrance) our fallen heroes that have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live unfettered, free to choose our leaders, where we live, how we spend our free time, etc.
The US flag is raised and lowered to half staff and brought to full height after noon.
