You can never simply 'gain' a religion. you have to understand, love and be faithful to the religion first, to be able to gain it. A religion is not just a thing to 'have. It is something that will get you through life right and be there for you in times of need.

As long as there has been religion, people have used it to manipulate others.
They are worshipping God, they do not necessarily want to gain anything from it. The purpose is to fellowship with one another and try to find new believers.

Well, that depends on the festival. At a festival of food, you may gain weight, for example; or if you went to an interactive circus, perhaps, you might gain an injury. What you might be getting at is that people gain something spiritually from certain festivals, like Christmas (if you don't believe it has become totally commercialised). They gain traits of giving, and feelings of generosity. If you follow the religion of that festival, it may help you to go back to the roots of the religion and help you to come to a better understanding of the religion.
