Several reasons. The Mayans predicted that this world would end December 21, 2012. This is when their calander ends. Nostradamas and Edgar Casey also predicted trouble on this date. This is why there is subdued anxiety about the date. We won't know for sure until December 21, 2012.

First off, don't even worry about it. I'm 100% sure that the world will not end on 2012. In the bible, god specifically said that nobody will know when the world will end, and that it will not end in 2012 for sure. The only reason scientists think that is that the Mayan Calendar ends on December 21, 2012. That doesn't mean the world will end on that specific date! It is just a silly hoax, basically to scare the geebies out of people.
