There are two Churchill Rivers in Canada (if there are others someone please add details)
One is in Labrador. It in the early days of colonization, the Hudson's Bay Company had an outpost at the mouth of the river. It now has a large hydroelectric plant on it.
The more well known Churchill River is in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is 1609 km long and flows from Churchill Lake in Saskatchewan and snakes eastward across Manitoba to Hudson's Bay. It to was the sight of early HBC outposts. It was called a "voyaguer's highway" because it was heavily used by early traders/trappers.
The river serves a number of purposes. One is recreational: it attracts fishermen who enjoy both the rugged area and the fishing. People who like a challenging boat trip travel along the Churchill as well
It also has a large hydroelectric plant - one that has caused concerns about the negative impact it is having on the birds and fish that depend upon the river.
