The daily life of a person with epilepsy can be very frustrating. Many, if not most, people have a very limited understanding of the disorder. In many cases, people with epilepsy are avoided, or treated as if they are disabled. Epilepsy is not a disability. It is not a mental illness. It is a neurological disorder that disrupts normal brain activity for anywhere from a few seconds up to a minute or so. It is a temporary physical event that causes various symptoms, depending on how much of the brain is affected by the seizure. Because of a widespread misunderstanding of epilepsy, it is extremely hard for people with epilepsy to get good jobs, even though there are many famous, high achievers--including Supreme Court judges, professional football players, Congressmen, actors...--who have epilepsy. Most of the time they feel perfectly normal, the same as anyone else. Epilepsy only affects someone when they are having a seizure. There are different kinds of seizures, so it depends on the type of seizure and how serious it is as to how the person will feel. They may feel a bit disorientated or like they or dreaming if it is a mild seizure. For mild seizures people could be back to normal in minutes, or even seconds from a very minor seizure. They might feel a bit strange for a few seconds and that is all. If it is serious, they won't be conscious of what is happening. After they come round, they may feel very tired and could have a headache and take some time to recover.

Epilepsy means that people have seizures. There are many kinds of seizures and they affect people in different ways. See the related question below. For some people epilepsy makes very little difference to their life and for others it can make a major difference. It depends on the form and severity of epilepsy they have.

Can epilepsy effect learing maths?

That will depend on the nature and severity of epilepsy. Many people with epilepsy do very well in all aspects of education. For others, epilepsy, like many health problems, can interfere with education. It would be more as a result of them missing a lot of time from school than a direct influence of epilepsy itself.

Can flashing lights make you have seizures?

There is a form of epilepsy known as photosensitive epilepsy. People who have that form can have a seizure as a result of flashing lights. They are a very small percentage of the people who have epilepsy. It is about 3% to 5%. For the vast majority of people who have epilepsy, flashing lights have no effect on them at all.

What happens when someone with epilepsy sees flashing lights?

For most people with epilepsy, nothing will happen. A common misconception is that anyone that has epilepsy will have their seizures triggered when they see flashing lights. However, that is only for people with a form of epilepsy known as photosensitive epilepsy. That is only about 3% to 5% of people who have epilepsy. For the others, it has no effect whatsoever. Their seizures would be triggered by other factors. For those that do have photosensitive epilepsy then seeing flashing lights could start a seizure.

How does epilepsy effect your family?

Family members will usually watch out for someone who has epilepsy. They will learn what to do as they get used to the person's seizures. As they do, it becomes less of a problem within the family.
