Contrary to popular belief, the acid is not directly responsible for the digestion of nutrients in the stomach. The hydrochloric acid is there to provide suitable acidic conditions for pepsin to work efficiently. The pepsin breaks down proteins into smaller amino acids.

the food is now in the stomach.the stomach is having gastric glands and in this gastric glads there is this HCL acid.this HCL acid does different jobs: 1-kills germs 2-activates pepsum. This pepsum gets converted into pepsinogen. PEPSIN helps in breaking down proteins. 3-mucus--->protects inner lining of stomach from the action of the acids under normal conditions.
