Plate tectonics moves plates around, either tearing apart land masses or smashing them into each other. This changes the shapes and positions of subcontinents. When plates collide, they slowly build up mountain ranges, plateaus, and even basins. Also, when plates collide, they can create subduction zones, which may lead to volcanoes and islands. An example of such a location is Indonesia.

What is a sentence with the word plate tectonics?

Plate tectonics are the effects on continental and oceanic plates as they move and collide. Example :"Geologists study plate tectonics to find future stress points and earthquake zones."

What is the difference between earth tectonics and martian tectonics?

Plate tectonics on earth are vigorous and ongoing. Plate tectonics on Mars are a matter of debate. Long thought to be only in Mars distant past, there is a shift in opinion on the question of plate tectonics on Mars, and some (not all) scientists now believe that there is mild and sporadic plate tectonics happening on Mars to this day. But all agree that if that is the case, it is a fraction of those happening on earth.

Is volcanic activity on Venus caused by plate tectonics?

No. Scientists believe that the crust of Venus is too thick to support plate tectonics. Volcanic activity is likely driven by hot spots.

When was the plate tectonics theory accepted?

it wasnt accepted. Wegener's theory of continetal drift wasnt accepted. the theory of plate tectonics was created when scientists discovered about sea floor spreading and magnetic reversals. but i dont know when the theory of plate tectonics was created. so you can ask about that.

What was the effect of scientists discovery of ocean floor spreading?

The theory of plate tectonics was supported greatly.

How do volcanoes help plate tectonics?

Volcanoes don't help plate tectonics; volcanoes are the result of plate tectonics.

How do plate tectonics help?

Question is too broad. How do they help what? Are you asking how plate tectonics WORK?

Why is plate tectonics theory thought to be a unifying theory?

Plate tectonics is considered to be a unifying theory because a consensus finds it to be true. Most scientists believe the plate tectonics cause volcanoes and earthquakes.

What drives plate motion?

Plate tectonics is the name given to the forces that drive plate motion. Scientists don't know what causes the natural phenomenon of plate tectonics.

What do scientists called the theory that describes the motion of the plates?

Plate Tectonics

What other scientists except for geologist find the theory of plate tectonics in their work?

Geophysicists, Seismologists, Geomorphologists and Palaeontologists are some examples of scientists who's work involves or is affected by the theory of plate tectonics.

What are the methods scientists use today to test plate tectonics?

Seismographs, etc.

What is a sentence with the word plate tectonics?

Plate tectonics are the effects on continental and oceanic plates as they move and collide. Example :"Geologists study plate tectonics to find future stress points and earthquake zones."

Who were the scientists that put this theory of plate tectonics together?

Alfred Wegner started the discussion with his theory of continental drift which was later proven and merged into the science of plate tectonics.

What do scientists believe is the force behind plate tectonics theory?

gravity slab pull
