polar bears in the past were used by the Inuit people and other indigenous people of the land to survive. They provided a good source of food, but their livers are poisonous because they contain high amounts of vitamins. Their furs can be used to make great water proof shoes, or coats, which was really necessary back in the older days for people to survive! They evolved from the grizzly bear. So mostly the polar bear now is just useless, since people can import clothes to the north and have plenty of other sources of food. Thanks to humans that hunt polar bears the population is decreasing, they are having a hard time surviving in the climate as it is, because they have been seen to resort to cannibalism. Now there are laws to protect them, because of poachers who sell or trade the fur. They don't really have a direct benefit for humans, but you can saw they keep the population of the seal down, since it is their main source of nutrients!
