Penguins are able to protect themselves through their excellent swimming ability as well as their coloration. Penguins have white or other light colors on their stomachs and black on their backs. This protects them from being seen by predators while they are in the water. If a predator is below them in the water, the white stomach will blend into the snow and the light shining down from the sun. If a predator is above the penguin, the black will blend into the dark sea.

∙ 13y agothey usually just swim away from predators (when in the water), and try to make it to land (where water-born predtors can't reach). even though they do occasionally bite, penguins don't have teeth, so in the event of a land-born predator, they usually create a commotion and "circle the wagons" (and hope the predator doesn't find a straggler). to protect their eggs from air-born predators, the penguin keeps it's eggs on it's feet with a flap of skin over the top.

∙ 9y agoThe Atlantic Puffin has no natural land predators in their habitat and are protected by law. However their eggs still preyed on by certain gulls.
Other puffin species are preyed on by foxes, Arctic foxes, owls, bald eagles, peregrine falcons and egg-sntaching ravens or gulls.
Puffins deliberately nest in inaccessible cliffs on islands and coasts where it is near impossible for land predators to access them. This is their main defence against land predators including humans. The majority of puffin colonies are on islands that are not inhabited by any carnivore mammals. It seems they are very smart about selecting their habitats.
As for bird predators, the puffin will simply withdraw into the cliff-holes that they are nesting in. They burrow their eggs into the cliff-side nest in order to try and make them harder for egg-snatchers to spot.
