Religion was known to us in script form. the Art which gave us in descriptive shapes to understand and worship. It is a great contribution to every religion.
art is related to religion because a Christian artist may have run out of ideas and though about a verse from The Bible that he could put a picture to like Jesus is the good shepherd you could paint Jesus as a shepherd.

De 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

Although given in several scriptures, the above is abundantly clear. As it has been shown through the centuries, the heathen side of man has little to no faith in that that is now seen, so the natural propensity is to desire an object, a picture, a statue to make what one worships more "real". The Lord God of Heaven and earth, the creator and savior will not fit in a picture frame, a mold or any such thing. Such belittles the very concept of God, bringing the idea of God closer to man's level. The scripture reveals that by faith we see and not by sight.

Religion has served to inspire and fund the arts for thousands of years. I am not sure if you are curious about any religion in particular, but within Europe, for example, you have only to walk into a cathedral to see how religion has provided a backdrop for some of the most beautiful creations the world has ever seen.

But you see religion in art outside of church walls as well, and I would say that this is simply because for the longest time, everyone was religious. The significant role it played in art follows from the fact that it played a significant role in society as a whole. What this amounts to is a religious mold for what is considered "beautiful".

If you look at the evolution of art over time, it changes as society embraces new religions: in Britain, you see the prehistoric art forms revolving around stone circles (like Stonehenge), and then the arrival of the Celts spurs a new culture in the British Isles that is nature centered in its religious beliefs, and its art reflected that: art depicting swirls of wind and water and animals all serve as references to what is important to that society, what they worship. Christianity arrived in Britain in full force with the invasion of the Saxons, and suddenly you start seeing crosses everywhere, the all-powerful feminine role in Celtic belief begins to diminish in the face of the notion of the graceful sacrifice of Christ-like men. Christianity continues to develop, sometimes in its "pure" form from continental Europe, sometimes mingling with the native religions (we see a Celtic hero be adopted by Christianity to become King Arthur, whose knights search for the Holy Grail, a Christian relic).

It might be easier to think about why you might make a piece of art, like a song, for example. Suppose you were writing a song. Perhaps you're writing it about someone that you love? Think about how your description of that love would change if you changed the religion in which you were raised, and the time period. It's a simple exercise, but it might give you an idea of the role beliefs play in our perceptions of the world around us, and thus, how we reproduce it in art. :)

Some art depicted religious figures, religion also kept somethings from being depicted in art like Muslims believe that people and animals should not be in artwork because it distracts the viewer. In Muslim art there usually are the use of floral patterns and arabesque. For a period of time in the Byzantine Empire the emperor banned the use of icons in it's painting claiming it went against their religion. After a period of time though it was taken off.

The cathedrals that were begun in the middle ages were to done to express the power of God and to display how man was reaching for God through the use of stone and stain glass. Many of them took many years before they were finally finished. The art in the cathedrals and Churches told the bible stories and the stations of the cross. A huge percentage of the population couldn't read or write so to get the people to understand the stories of the bible they were on the walls and windows of the churches. Passion plays were also done. So, the art and architecture was meant to promote and glorify the church and to show the church as the means for man communicate with God.
