When mine quit working it was just the cable at the end of the handle that broke. You have to buy the whole handle assy at the dealer, but it was cheap enough. Alternately you can take a length of bailing wire, or parachute cord with a slip loop on the end and thread it down and onto the place where the cable attaches to then tie a loop in the other end and limp along in that fashion for a while. BTW mine is an 88 4.3L 4wd.
