How do replace a headlight switch on a 2000 jeep Cherokee does the metal rod on the knob just pop into the switch?

On my 96 Cherokee Country there is a button on the underside of the switch that releases the knob and shaft and the shaft just pushes back in until it catches.

If it was just the plastic cap on the switch that broke, you can maybe fix it with superglue. Can you still turn the metal spindle underneath?If this doesn't work you might have to replace the whole switch and solder the wires correctly inside.

The headliner needs to come down. Then make sure the glass is on the track and locked in place. Then check the wiring on both the switch and the motor unit. Also check the fuse. If push come to shove you may have to replace the drive motor. The other possibility is that the rubber washers that mount the motor have decayed from heat and vibration and the motor is arcing in some metal. If all else fails or you just think its too much trouble, take your Jeep to someone that fixes electric windows.

If you need to replace the bulbs, they are easy - just unscrew and replace. In order to replace the HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY (bulb and housing) you will have to remove the grille (look for 3 small screws to undo) and then you should be able to pull out the headlight by pulling the bottom first, then the top. No 3 screws just one on the top of the light remove it, it is a very long screw! Then just pull straight out from the bottom it has three insert screw things that hold it in place but they are more like tabs that are being held in by a plastic holder. No need to remove 3 screws, grand Cherokee year 2000 .

To replace the new bulb, never touch it with your bare fingers, as this will greatly shorten the bulb's life, if it even work's at all. Use a tissue or something else in that order to handle the new bulb. Push the new bulb into the socket, put the socket back into the housing, and twist a quarter turn clockwise to secure the socket into the fixture.

Now you have access to the headlight bulb. There are two metal wires hoilding the light bulb. Unhook the metal wires, replace the bulb, and hook it back in place. Good luck!

I unfortunately just had to replace this on my 2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The fan relay is located in a compartment just below the passenger side headlight and is mounted to the body with two sheet metal screws. If you shine a light in the crevice between the battery and the headlight, you should see it.You have three choices to replace it. First you could pull the front bumper cover off supposedly giving you good access to the switch. Second you could pull the passenger side headlight out and drill a 2" inch hole in the cover assembly that is located below the removed headlight. Drill the hole on the outboard section which is the area above the switch. What I did was to remove the battery and tray assembly and the passenger side headlight assembly. Somebody had been in there before me so the switch was just sitting loose in the compartment. It is a bit cramped in there for this particular access method so I opted not to remount the switch. Instead I took 2 wires and mounted them to either side of the switch using 10-32 screws and nuts and ran the other end of these wires to one of the chassis grounds on the forward fender area just above the switch. I used two wires because I heard the switch uses the screws to ground the switch and it will eventually fail without it. I reconnected the switch and slid it back into the compartment and put the battery area back together. As this relay has a bad history of failing in this model, I felt it justified in leaving it unmounted since I will probably be back in there to replace it again one day anyway. One thing to note is that I found the relay on eBay for considerably less than what the dealer or parts stores wanted.
