The easiest and most common way for scientists to view cells is to look at them under a light microscope. A thin segment of the sample tissue is usually taken, stained, and mounted on a microscope slide.

Most plant and animal cells are too small (1-100 µm) to be viewed except under a microscope.

Robert Hooke discovered cells by using a simple light reflecting microscope to look at a sample of cork. He noticed the small spaces in the sample and named them cells. So i would imagine this was shared among scientist and this experiments was re-conducted with more complex objects/organisms as the microscope became more advanced.

Using a microscope and looking through the eye lenses. Every cell has a nucleas or a cell wall wich is a rigid layer to protect plants and animal cells have a cell membrane acting as a wall, they control what goes in and out of the cell.
