The largest threat to sharks is the shark finning industry, in which sharks have their fins cut off and are thrown back into the water to die. Shark fins are in high demand due to the popularity of shark fin soup, a traditional delicacy from China. Estimates of sharks killed for their fins range from 26 to 73 million per year. Many sharks (about 50 million per year) are also caught as accidental "bycatch" in longlines, trawls, and nets targeting other species. "Ghostfishing" occurs when fishing gear is abandoned and continues to catch whatever swims by. Other threats to sharks include shark fishing for meat, cartilage and liver oil, and destruction of important habitat, such as the mangrove swamps and shallow lagoons that provide safe havens for shark babies. Pollution and the decline of shark prey species also lead to decreased shark populations. Perhaps the biggest threat to sharks is the lack of widespread awareness or interest in their welfare. While species such as whales and panda bears enjoy widespread protections and public support, the perception of sharks as dangerous killing machines and the lack of a global outcry against their slaughter makes it difficult for them to gain the same status.

Sharks are threatened by humans. Humans catch them for fun, or to cut off their fins and sell them. Sometimes they just get caught in nets. People just kill them because they think that sharks kill loads of people which isn't true. There are some people who want to help sharks though. When people catch sharks for theirr fins the usally chop them off and put the shark back in the water so it can be eaten by others.

Sharks are very sensitive to the environment. They often respond to changes by investigating the source of a new vibration, scent, or sound. This is why they are such excellent hunters.
