Basically by acting as a brake for the bouncing movement. Shocks consists of pistons moving in an oil filled cylinder. As the piston moves, the oil has to squeeze past from one side of the piston to another, which slows the movement down.

What are strut structures?

The Struts are the shock absorbers that include the spring. They are commonly referred to as McPherson Struts. Most cars now have Struts on the front and rear instead of the simple shock absorbers.

Are hydraulic shock absorbers rather that gas charged available for cars and light trucks?

yes

What property makes gasess useful for shock absorbers in mountain bikes and cars?

Gases are compressible.

Why are cars fitted with shock absorbers?

They take the "bounce" out of the suspension, improve the ride and handling performance.

What is the working principle of shock absorbers?

Shock absorbers work to minimize the impact of daily wear and collisions on cars, shoes, and other items. Ideally, a shock absorber takes the energy that occurs in a collision (moving, or kinetic energy) and converts it into heat, minimizing the amount of damage to the object.

What dose shocks do for the cars?

Shock absorbers are a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and dampen shock impulses. Their intended sole purpose is to damp spring oscillations.

How do earthquake resistant buildings protect you from earthquake vibrations?

This works on the same phenomenon as the shock absorbers that the cars have. Also, it would be same as a spring.

Why would a cars rear end sag in extreme cold and go back to regular ride height in warmer temperatures?

Old gas filled shock absorbers.

Does a car have gas?

Cars run on gasoline. The automotive air conditioning systems use a freon gas, r134a. Most shock absorbers and struts are nitrogen gas charged.

What do you do when you hit a bump and the car sounds like it hit a ditch?

REPLACE THE SHOCK ABSORBERS OR STRUTS OR BOTH.....DUUUUUHHHHH CARS ARNT MADE TO RIDE JUST ON SPRINGS ALONE SO YOU HAVE STRUTS IN THE FRONT AND SHOCK ABSORBERS IN THE BACK. IF THE FRONTS OR BACK OR BOTH ARE SHOT GUESS WHAT??? SOUNDS LIKE YOU HIT A DITCH WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP........... Also check the right side motor mount. Sometimes the rubber will tear and the mount bottoms out.
