There is a statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, not far from where I live. Soon it will be spring, and the cherry blossoms will be out, and there will be a gazillion tourists visiting this and other monuments throughout the city. As a Catholic, statues and images of secular subjects - such as President Lincoln or Gen. Robert E. Lee - would seem to have little or no effect on my faith. Statues and images that recall God to my mind have a great effect, however - simply by calling God to my mind. As someone who works, and drives on the freeways, shops, talks with friends, runs errands and takes care of home all day long, it is easy to forget to think about Our Lord Jesus Christ, to forget to put Him first in all that we do. As lovers who are separated by great distances surround themselves with mementoes of their beloved - photographs and paintings, cards, letters, ribbons, ticket stubs, stuffed animals, etc. - Catholics have always loved to surround themselves with mementoes of their beloved, who is Jesus Christ the Lord. Statues and images of Jesus and of His family - the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels, and saints - help us to recall His eternal presence in our lives.

How did the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland affect the people living there?

It wasn't so much between Catholics and protestants as between Irish (who were mostly Catholic) and Englishmen (who were mostly protestant). The Irish objected to the English (and their descendants) living in their country and oppressing them, particularly as English law suppressed the Catholic faith, and the practice thereof. It made life particularly difficult for Irish Catholics for whom the practice of their faith was illegal. One of the unforeseen benefits was, that for the most part, the Catholic faith of the Irish was particularly strong, comparable to the oppressed Catholics in Poland. As the Catholics have gained ascendancy, they have started to lose their faith and become indistinguishable from other modern people.
