In my city (Columbia SC) drivers are either owner operators or lease drivers. In each case, the driver pays a set fee for use of the company name and dispatch service as well as insurance etc, and after paying for his own gas the amount of revenue he takes in after such is paid is his net income.
The main difference between a chauffeur riven car and a taxi cab is the way they get paid. Taxi cab drivers tend to be independent contracts and depend on the passenger's fare for their wage. With chauffeur driven cars, the chauffeur gets paid by the company, not the person.
