When a bystander stands around and does nothing. It will make the bullying even worse. The bully might get the mistaken idea that everyone agrees with him/her because they are not trying to stop him/her. It also appears to the person being bullied that he/she is all alone and has no help in defending themselves.
A bystander is a person who just stands by and watches. They take no action to put a stop to the bullying. They are actually making the bullying worse because it appears to the person who is being bullied that everyone agrees with the bully's actions. Being an Upstander is a better choice. This is a person who steps in and puts a stop to the bullying. Most bullies will not take on two or more people at one time. This takes a very self confident person to be an Upstander.

It is an imbalance of power between two people. Theren are many different reasons why someone will bully. But it IS something that they have leaned how to do.

It can also result in social influence, where people conform to the actions of others, even if they know it is wrong. Additionally, the bystander effect may cause individuals to interpret a situation as less serious or urgent due to the presence of others.
