The respiratory system oxygenates blood that is needed for the digestive system to work properly; air breathed in to the lungs permeates through the alveoli into a network of capillaries. This blood then makes its way through arteries to the digestive organs.

The digestive system, meanwhile, gives out nutrients to the blood after food has been processed by your body. This oxygenated, nutrient-added blood then circulates around your body to various organs.

The lungs are also organs that need these nutrients and it's actually a chicken-and-egg situation: the respiratory system provides the digestive system with the necessary oxygen, while the digestive system gives the respiratory organs the nutrients that they need.

Keep in mind that each does not only support the other; their combined efforts keep muscles working, too. For example, when you're running, you need both oxygen (respiratory system) and energy in the form of glucose (digestive system).

As seen below, there is no direct relationship between the respiratory system and the digestive system, other than the product of each allows the other to function and both are carried y the circulatory system.

Path of the Respiratory System

  1. Air enters your body through your nose and mouth
  2. Air goes down into the chest through the trachea
  3. Air flows into the alveoli
  4. Air passes from the alveoli and into the capillaries
  5. Oxygen is given off and carried by your red blood cells to the body cells
  6. Carbon dioxide goes from the capillaries into the lungs
  7. Carbon dioxide leaves your body traveling back up through the airways

Path of the digestive system

  1. Your teeth break the food down into smaller pieces and mix the food with salvia in the mouth
  2. The food is pushed through the esophagus by a wave-like action called peristalsis
  3. The food enters the stomach, where it is mixed and broken down by digestive juices
  4. Partially digested food enters the small intestines
  5. Nutrients enter the blood through capillaries that line the wall of the small intestines and are carried to the cells in the body.
  6. Undigested food passes into the large intestines where water is stored.
  7. Waste is stored in the rectum before it exits the body through the anus as a bowel movement

The respiratory system function to keep the relative concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen where they should be. This is seen by the body as the blood pH, as CO2 levels rise, blood pH decreases. This drives the the rate of respiration which flushes the body of CO2. However, if the source of H+ is from ingested food the acid-base balance depends on the excretion of excess H+ via the digestive system. Probably the most important is the oxygen that is supplied to the smooth muscles that move the food through by tonic and peristaltic contractions.
