there is a fuel line running from the filter to the rear of the injector tube.
You can drive it without a filter in an emergency. But do not continue to drive it this way. You risk ending up with clogged injectors, which can be an expensive repair. You need the filter to stop any foreign objects from getting to the injectors/carburetor. Of course you will have to connect the fuel lines together after removing the filter. Why not just buy a new filter instead?
The fuel filter in the 2000 Kia Sportage looks like a cylinder with a domed top. There are two lines attached at each end of the filter to facilitate the passage of fuel through the filter.
Your injectors are probably clogged. Replace your filter, and make sure your lines are clean.
it is located under the oil filter in the engine compartment and you have to pinch the clips on the sides of the fuel lines at the filter, push them toward the filter and then remove lines and clamp, it is easier to remove fuel line from metal junction under truck for the rear line
To prime there is a primer button below the fuel filter about 6 inches, push that a few times. Usually you will need to bleed the lines if it is not starting, use a wrench to loosen two or three of the fuel lines where they connect to the injectors, then crank the engine until fuel comes out of the lines. Tighten the fuel lines again and it should start just fine.
it is on the drivers side of the block and has two aluminum and rubber lines that connect to the oil filter relocator.
The filter may be integrated into to fuel pump or it will be located between the fuel tank and the engine. Crawl under the vehicle and follow the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the engine and if you do not find the filter it is located in the tank and is a permanent filter.

Locate the fuel filter on the 1996 Skylark frame rail. While covering the fitting with a rag, loosen the fuel lines, and remove the filter. Take the filter off, and connect the lines to the new filter, keeping the flow arrow towards the front of the car.
Loosen the injector lines at the injectors not the pump then crank the engine till there is fuel at the injectors then retighten the lines.
Remove the fuellines on both ends by pulling the black connector away from the filter. Undo the bolt holding the filter in. Remove the filter and but in a new one. Connect the fuel lines.
