Kidneys are necessary as they: maintain the balance between salt and water (which helps to regulate blood pressure); regulate the body's acidity (acids versus bases - pH level); filter blood by removing wastes and diverting them to the urinary bladder; and produce numerous hormones that help to manage the body in other ways (including regulating calcium in the blood, red blood cell production, and overall blood pressure).

Thus, their primary function is to keep blood healthy.

Kidneys constantly filter the excretory (waste) products out of your blood. These waste products are excreted in the urine. Aside from waste products, also ions like calcium and magnesium are excreted when they have to high blood levels. In case of calcium shortage, calcium will be retaken from the primary urine and released back into the bloodstream. By regulating ion concentrations like this, kidneys also regulated the acidity of blood.

Kidneys also produce EPO, which stimulates the production of red blood cells. They also produce the precursors for vitamin D, which are turned into active vitamin D in the skin.

Finally, the kidneys help regulate the bloodpressure.

The kidney is part of the excretory system. The kidney filters the toxins from the blood, before urine is taken to the bladder.

It removes waste that is otherwise harmful to the body. If there was no urinary system, you would most likely die as there is no way to remove the toxic wastes in your body.
