The number of protons is the atomic number on the periodic table. The number of protons defines the type of element. It effects the mass of the atom and the number of electrons. Kind of vague, but i hope it helps until a chemistry major responds.

Basically the charge of an atom/ion =

number of protons - number of electrons

as each proton has one positive charge and each electron has one negative charge.

Please note that an atom always has the same number of protons and electrons, if it has a positive or negative charge it becomes an ion.
