Different cells have many different shapes and sizes to adapt to their function. For example, a root hair cell is long where as a red blood cell is round with hole in it quite like a doughnut.

cells differ in shape and size because the cells have different functions and the physical attributes benefit it in the task it performs, eg the red blood cells are like a hollowed circular disk which help them get through the blood stream.
